BATH TOWNSHIP — Hundreds of people joined in the search Sunday for a missing 8-year-old boy in Allen County, but unfortunately the body of Mathew Converse was found in a pond on North McCullough Street at 3:34 p.m. Sunday.
He had been missing since midnight.
Bath Fire Chief Joe Kitchen broke the news on the department’s Facebook page.
“Our heartfelt thanks go out to the hundreds of volunteers who showed up today to help search for a missing child in our Bath community. Sadly, the search did not have a happy ending. We send our deepest sympathy to his family, neighbors, and friends.”
The Allen County Sheriff’s Office had officers out throughout the early morning hours Sunday looking for Converse, who had autism and was said to be drawn to water, trains and parks.
On Sunday the sheriff’s office put out a plea on social media in an attempt to find him.
A command center was set up at Schoonover Park where search efforts were coordinated.
Several agencies were on the scene, and the investigation into his disappearance and subsequent death are continuing.
