OTTAWA — A final pre-trial and jury trial dates were set Thursday for a Continental man who has been charged with seven counts of rape and four counts of gross sexual imposition.
Putnam County Common Pleas Judge Keith Schierloh set a final pre-trial for Michael T. Huizenga, 51, at 11 a.m. Sept. 5 and a jury trial at 8:30 a.m. for Oct. 15 to 17. Huizenga is accused of having sexual contact with a juvenile less than 13 years old every year since 2013 in Putnam County.
Huizenga was previously represented by attorney Ian Weber during a May 14 pretrial hearing. However, attorney E. Charles Bates is now representing him.
The victim’s family and Huizenga and his family members appeared in court on Thursday.
A trial was originally scheduled for Aug. 26, but Bates requested additional time to allow for him to review the case. Schierloh granted that request.
Schierloh said the case has been pending since March and the court is still within the 270 days for a speedy trial. He requested the state follow up with any additional discovery in the case by Aug. 16 and the defendant to provide any discovery to the state by Aug. 30.
Huizenga has been ordered not to consume alcohol, illegal drugs or prescription medication that has not been prescribed. He must submit to drug screening every Monday and Thursday, have no contact with the alleged victim and appear at all scheduled hearings.
