Driver located in cornfield with infrared after crash

CELINA — A driver was found in a cornfield in and out of consciousness after driving his semi-tractor trailer off north of state Route 29 at the curve between Staeger and Havemann roads.

Upon being called to the scene at 1:44 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, the Celina Police Department was unable to locate the driver. A helicopter from the Ohio State Highway Patrol was called and located Alexander Khaspekov, 54, with its forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera.

The investigation revealed Khaspekov was operating a 2015 Volvo semi westbound on state Route 29, failed to negotiate the curve and drove off the north side of the roadway. After traveling a few hundred feet, the vehicle crashed through a drainage ditch and came to rest. Khaspekov apparently left the truck and wandered into the cornfield. He was taken to Mercer Health by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
