Elida man critically injured in four-car crash

AMERICAN TOWNSHIP — An Elida man was transported to a Lima hospital in critical condition following a four-vehicle traffic accident Tuesday afternoon.

A press release sent Wednesday afternoon by the Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol stated the Allen County Coroner’s Office reported John Guagenti had died Wednesday from injuries in the crash. That report was later withdrawn by the patrol.

The accident occurred at 4:47 p.m. Tuesday. A vehicle driven by Eric Fritz, 58, of Delphos, was westbound on Elm Street, east of Eastown Road and struck the rear of a vehicle driven by Guagenti, 54, of Elida.

Guagenti’s vehicle was then pushed into the rear of another westbound vehicle driven by Sarah L. Carder, 33, of Delphos, which crossed the center line and struck an eastbound vehicle driven by Kelly D. Wurm, 44, of Lima.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash, according to the highway patrol.

Guagenti was transported by American Township EMS to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center with critical injuries. Fritz was transported by members of the Lima Fire Department to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s in Lima with non-life-threatening injuries.

Carder was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while Wurm was treated on scene for minor injuries. A passenger in Wurm’s vehicle, Haylee Wurm, age 14, of Lima, was not injured.

All parties were reportedly wearing seat belts.

Assisting troopers on scene was American Township EMS, the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, the American Township Police Department, Lima City Prosecutor’s Office, Kenny’s Auto Wrecking, Army’s Towing and Big Daddy’s Towing.

The crash remains under investigation.
