One taken into custody after morning standoff in Shawnee Township

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — One person was taken into custody following an early-morning standoff in Shawnee Township on Wednesday.

According to a statement from the Shawnee Township Police Department, an officer heard gunshots in the area of the 2300 block of Adgate Road at approximately 12:57 a.m. Wednesday. A short time later, a resident called police and advised that a vehicle had just passed his residence, and someone was shooting at or near his house.

The caller had followed the vehicle to 2343 Western Ohio Ave. and told police he witnessed a suspect enter the residence. Township officers met the caller in the area and — with the assistance of the Allen County Sheriff’s Office — set up a perimeter around the residence.

At approximately 1:41 a.m., four people exited the residence and were detained by police. Several attempts to contact two additional subjects in the residence were unsuccessful, and it was decided to request the sheriff’s SWAT team due to the nature of the call, according to the statement.

A detective from the Shawnee Township Police Department wrote a search warrant as the residence remained under surveillance. At approximately 4:09 a.m. both subjects from the residence exited and were brought to the Shawnee Township Police Department for questioning. The search warrant was then executed on the residence and a vehicle at the scene. Evidence was located and collected.

One subject is being held at the Allen County jail for suspicion of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle. Names are being withheld pending the filing of formal charges.
