LEIPSIC — A Leipsic man who robbed three people at gunpoint early Saturday morning appeared in Putnam County Municipal Court Tuesday for initial arraignment where bond and a hearing was set.
Municipal Court Judge Chad Niese set bond for Isaiah Oliver, 18, at a $250,000 cash surety bond. A preliminary hearing was set for 11 a.m. Thursday in Municipal Court. Niese also ordered Oliver to not be present at the homes of the victims or have contact with them.
When the Putnam County Sheriffs Office was asked for a police report, they said the incident is still under investigation.
During Tuesday’s hearing, Niese said Oliver attempted and committed a theft and fled immediately after the attempt with a deadly weapon. He brandished what appeared to be a handgun demanding money and cell phones from three victims while at 117 1/2 E. Main St. in Leipsic. Niese said this offense is aggravated robbery, a felony in the first degree. The offense is punishable by three to 10 years in prison if convicted and a maximum fine of $20,000.
Andrew Benchic, assistant prosecuting attorney, recommended the bond amount and said Oliver had extensive prior juvenile court charges. There were two charges for aggravated robbery that were adjudicated, two for theft, one for domestic violence and six violations of court orders.
According to a news release from Putnam County Sheriffs Office, at 2:50 a.m. Saturday, the office received a report of an armed robbery that occurred in Leipsic. The victim reported that the suspect held them down at gunpoint and had taken cash and the victim’s cell phone. The victim described the suspect as a Hispanic male approximately 5 foot 8 inches tall. He was wearing slides, a white T-shirt and athletic shorts. The gun was described as a handgun.
While officers were gathering information from the victim, another officer advised there were two other victims that also reported being robbed at gunpoint by the same suspect. The two additional victims also had reported their cell phones taken during the robbery.
While doing an immediate search of the area for the suspect, officers were able to locate the victims’ cell phones.
Through the investigation, Putnam County Sheriffs Office detectives were able to present a photo lineup that included Oliver. The victims were able to point out the person they believed robbed them from the lineup, and the detectives were able to identify the suspect as Oliver.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office obtained a warrant for Oliver for aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony.
