VAN WERT — Local poultry farm Pine Valley Ranch LLC is asking for the Ohio Department of Agriculture to sign off on a permit modification for a storage pond that would allow the ranch to produce 6.6 million gallons of liquid eggwash per year.

The ODA will hold a public meeting Thursday night regarding the application, allowing neighbors an opportunity to voice their concerns or support for the project.

The open house will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 25 at the Van Wert County Extension Office administrative building, 1055 S. Washington St., Van Wert. A public meeting will follow at 7 p.m.

The modification would allow Pine Valley Ranch to increase the volume of waste generated by its on-site egg processing facility to 7.5 million gallons of eggwash liquid and 3,400 tons egg shells per year, according to the draft permit.

Per the application, “liquid eggwash would be applied under the control of the facility on crop ground surrounding the facility. The modified manure management plan includes 52 acres that will be utilized for the application of the liquid through a center pivot irrigation system.”

ODA first issued the permit in August 2016 authorizing construction of an eggwash storage pond as well as six poultry barns and storage facilities, estimated to house more than 2 million laying hens and store 18,600 tons of solid manure produced annually.

Pine Valley Ranch has since submitted an application to modify that permit to construct a new storage pond large enough to hold 6.6 million gallons of egg-wash liquid produced by the on-site egg processing facility, according to a copy of the draft permit.

The farm has “proposed crop rotation that will remove more nutrients than would be applied through the center pivot. The plan proposes to distribute the egg shell solids to area crop farmers to land apply the material as a soil amendment and source of organic nutrients.”

ODA will accept public comment regarding the permit modification through 5 p.m. August 1. Those comments may be submitted in person this evening, online via email or by mail.
