LIMA — The victim in Allen County’s fifth homicide of 2019 was a prison guard, but investigators on Monday said his job is not believed to have played a role in his death.

The body of Gregory Cooper, 31, of Lima, was discovered by Lima police lying in the street outside his home in the 700 block of Franklin Street shortly before midnight Friday. According to a news release, Cooper had been shot numerous times. He was taken to Lima Memorial Health System, where he died a short time later.

Jo Ellen Smith, chief public information officer with Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, on Monday confirmed that Cooper was employed as a corrections officer at the Marion Correctional Institution and had been an employee there since Dec. 24, 2018.

“There is nothing concrete to suggest that his job had anything to do with (the shooting), but we’re also not dismissing it at this point,” LPD Detective Steve Stechschulte said.

He said no suspects have been taken into custody yet in connection with the shooting. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Lima Police Department at 419-227-4444, Stechschulte at 419-812-0059 or CrimeStoppers at 419-229-STOP (7867).
