COLUMBUS GROVE — Retired teachers and friends Jerry Bunn and Vicki Doty from Columbus Grove have trips planned to National Parks, and Spain and Scandinavia that they are looking for a group of adults to join them.
The friends plan to travel to U.S. National Parks in Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion and Las Vegas Oct. 12 to 22. Two other trips planned are to Spain visiting Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Costa Del Sol March 19 to 30 and Scandinavia July 27 to Aug. 5, 2020.
The Spain trip with 14 slots open and 21 signed up costs $4,300. The National Parks tour is $3,800 with one more spot available and 36 people signed up and the Scandinavia trip that was just planned this week costs is yet to be determined with 35 available spots. The cost includes handpicked hotels, breakfast, dinner and sightseeing tours with an expert tour director and local guides.
Bunn, who taught math at Columbus Grove schools for 35 years, and Doty, who taught health for 35 years at Ottawa-Glandorf schools, want adults to join them on the trips. They previously took groups to London and Paris, National Parks in the northern part of the country, Northern Italy, Slovenia, Austria and Ireland and Scotland last year.
“It’s good to go on these trips to experience new things and see how other people live,” Bunn said. Bunn has been to approximately 25 countries and Doty has visited 10 countries.
Bunn said his favorite country to visit was Australia where he had visited four times in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003 as a chaperone for high school students from all over the United States who competed in a running race.
“You could speak the language and people were very friendly,” Bunn said. He said participating in these trips allow adults to get out of their comfort zone and explore the world.
Doty said each country has its own unique aspect of food and culture. She said she has always enjoyed traveling and has discovered life in other countries is more laid back than in the United States.
“Florence, Italy, was my favorite and I loved being out in the countryside in Ireland because anything outdoors in the countryside interests me,” Doty said.
She said a lot of people like to travel out of the country, but they don’t know how to plan and these trips work with a tour company, Go Ahead Tours, Boston, who helps organize the trip, set the itinerary and provide bus transportation. Those going on future trips will have the opportunity to meet before the trip to get to know one another. They also will learn about international currency changes, luggage rules and passports.
Both agree they would like to visit New Zealand as they have never been before.
Bunn has nine books he has created using Shutterfly of photos he and group members have taken during their travels. He also has beer steins and shot glasses; he has collected 57 at Hard Rock Cafes and Hotels during his trips. Bunn and Doty collect T-shirts and magnets to remind them of their adventures.
