Man killed in Wednesday crash identified

LIMA — The identity of the man killed in a two-vehicle collision Wednesday in Allen County has been released by the Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Alex Wanjiru, 39, of Whitehall, Pennsylvania, died after two commercial vehicles collided at approximately 4:25 p.m. on U.S. 30 near the intersection with Thayer Road.

According to the patrol, a semi tractor-trailer, driven by Mark Meyer, 48, of Harrod, was eastbound on U.S. 30 and was attempting to make a left turn onto Thayer Road when his semi was struck by a box truck, driven by Wanjiru.

After impact, both vehicles traveled off the roadway and came to rest in the southeast corner of the intersection.

Wanjiru was pronounced deceased at the scene by Allen County Coroner’s Investigator Jamie Sizemore. Meyer received minor injuries as a result of the crash and was treated and released at the scene.

The patrol was assisted by the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, Beaverdam-Richland Fire Department, Cairo Fire Department, Beaverdam-Richland EMS, Miller Auto Towing, Beaverdam Fleet Towing, the Allen County Coroner’s Office, the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Whitehall, Pennsylvania, Police Department.

The crash remains under investigation.
