LIMA — The Kiwanis Club will hold its annual music awards luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, at the Lima Masonic Center, 2615 N. Cole St., Lima.
The Ronald W. Richards Scholarship and John Phillip Sousa Awards will be presented.
Music has always been an important part of the Lima Kiwanis Club. For example, at times the club has had an orchestra or band over the years with the first in 1920. The John Phillip Sousa National Band award was first sponsored in 1961, by the Metropolitan Kiwanis Club of Lima and was assumed by the Kiwanis Club of Lima, Ohio in 1980 after the Metropolitan club disbanded. The Sousa Award is granted to the senior deemed most worthy by a vote of his/her peers.
In 1987, the Kiwanis Club of Lima, Ohio, established the Ronald W. Richards Young Musicians Scholarship Fund in the memory of Mr. Richards after he passed away in 1986. He was the Music Director at Lima Senior High School for 25 years. In addition, he was the choral director at Trinity United Methodist Church for 30 years. The church holds several concerts a year and donates the proceeds to the fund. The club grants at least one scholarship annually. Any senior in the County is eligible to apply.
