LIMA — The ALDI on Elida Road is open once again.

Customers formed a line around the building early Monday morning, waiting for the store’s doors to open. The store had been closed for nearly five weeks as the ALDI underwent construction and remodeling, reopening to the public this past Friday.

Now, the Elida Road ALDI has a fresh look and interior, complete with an updated entryway, new signage and checkout lanes. The store is also larger with the addition of a fifth grocery aisle, this one dedicated to fresh produce, organic products and healthy easy-prep meals.

Ryan Harmon, director of operations for ALDI’s Springfield division, which oversees 74 Ohio ALDI stores including two in Lima, said the expansion will allow the store to add more products to its inventory.

The larger store now has more space for fresh food products, like ready-made salads and quick meals, Harmon explained.

“(That’s) what our customers are asking for and what the future of grocery is,” he said. “That’s the point of the remodel. We wanted to make the store bigger … so we can offer the product range we want for our customers, and this gives us the opportunity to do that.”

The grocery chain plans to invest $1.9 billion to upgrade more than 1,300 ALDI locations in 2019 and 2020, according to a company press release. ALDI intends to increase its organic and easy-prep meal selection by 40 percent through the store remodels.

“Remodeling and expanding our stores gives us more room for our refreshed product selection,” Sarah Brown, vice president of ALDI’s Springfield division, said in a press release. “We know our customers want more fresh and convenient options, and by renovating our stores, we are able to provide new products as well as more of their favorites.”

The Elida Road store is one of two ALDI locations in Lima. The grocery chain recently opened a new location at 2290 Harding Highway in December. Both stores are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
