LIMA — An inmate in the Allen County jail awaiting sentencing for engaging in sex with a minor was assaulted in his cell block Tuesday afternoon, according to a spokesman with the Allen County Sheriff’s Office.
Perry Jones, 22, of Lima, was taken to Lima Memorial Health System for treatment of facial injuries suffered in an altercation with fellow inmate Cody Sutherly.
A charge of misdemeanor assault is pending against Sutherly, who was placed on disciplinary lockdown following the incident, officials said.
According to a sheriff’s department spokesperson, Jones was housed in a cell block in the jail and reported that Sutherly, who was housed in the same block, began to taunt and harass him for unknown reasons. The situation escalated and Sutherly began throwing punches at Jones, the spokesman said. Perry began to fight back and the attack stopped.
Jail staffers were in the process of collecting video and statements related to the incident on Wednesday.
Jones faces 40 years in prison when he is sentenced March 4 after pleading guilty in January to six of 19 sex-related charges against him. He entered guilty pleas in Allen County Common Pleas Court to charges of attempted rape, gross sexual imposition, three counts of the illegal use of minors in nudity-oriented material and one count of attempted tampering with evidence.
A charge of rape, later amended to attempted rape alleged that Jones engaged in sexual conduct with a 9-year-old between August 2015 and November 2015. The remaining charges against the Lima man were dismissed.
Sutherly, 27, of Lima, is awaiting trial on charges of attempted rape, a first-degree felony, and gross sexual imposition, a felony of the third degree, for an alleged sexual encounter with an underage person.
