LIMA — A Lima man was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after police say he stabbed his mother, sending her to the hospital with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries.
According to Sgt. Jason Garlock of the Lima Police Department, officers were summoned at approximately 4:45 p.m. to 1157 Rice Ave., Apt. 2, and found Erika Hathaway, 44, suffering from knife wounds. She was transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center for treatment of unspecified injuries.
Taken into custody was her son, Garyson Merchant, 24, of Lima. He was charged with suspicion of felonious assault.
According to police, a verbal argument ensued between the mother and son. The argument escalated and Merchant reportedly retrieved a “samurai type” sword and stabbed Hathaway on the right side of her torso.
