Wednesday crash closed U.S. 30 in Van Wert County for hours

VAN WERT — Van Wert County Sheriff Thomas M. Riggenbach on Thursday released information surrounding a multiple-vehicle traffic accident that took place Wednesday morning on U.S. 30 west of Van Wert.

The crash occurred at about 9:40 a.m. when a semi driven by Stanley Woods, 60, of Decatur, Georgia, was eastbound on U.S. 30 and failed to yield the right of way to a westbound semi driven by Raymond Squires, 62, of Alliance.

Squires’ vehicle struck Woods’ vehicle in the rear passenger side of the trailer, which in turn struck a freight vehicle driven by Andrew Leimer, 30, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, which was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Payne Road.

The crash caused a portion of westbound U.S. 30 to be closed for almost three hours.

Squires and Leimer were transported to Van Wert County Health with minor injuries. Woods did not appear to be injured, the sheriff’s report said.

Woods was cited for failure to yield the right of way.
