New Bremen receives grant to protect firefighters

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen German Township Fire Department receiived more than $4,000 in grants from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation under a program to protect firefighters from carcinogens and other harmful health hazards.

The local department is one of 64 Ohio fire departments to share $693,000 in grants from the BWC’s Firefighter Exposure to Environmental Elements Grant Program and will receive $4,060.78 to purchase one extractor to clean equipment.

The initiative helps departments purchase safety gear, exhaust systems and specialized washing machines. The residue collected on firefighters’ gear can cause respiratory disease, cancer and other ailments, according to the BWC.
