Shawnee Luminary Night Becomes a “New” Old Tradition
Long before there were twinkling Christmas lights, luminaries lit the way to front doors each Christmas. In the spirit of the holiday, Shawnee neighborhoods will light up the sky for all to enjoy Tuesday, December 18th from 6 – 9 p.m.
This is the second year for the event after a 20-year hiatus. Shawnee Living partnered with residents in Amanda Lakes, Breezewood, Indianbrook and Wildbrook neighborhoods last year to bring back the age-old tradition. And with almost 500 homes participating in this year’s light show, Publisher Jodie Robinson promises residents won’t be disappointed.
“Christmas is about creating traditions. We hope this becomes one for not only Shawnee families who live in our neighborhoods, but for those who are simply seeking out the peace and beauty of the season,” says Robinson. “It’s a way to escape the hustle and bustle of the season and something we hope to continue for many years to come.”
More than 7,500 paper bags filled with sand and white candles will silently line the streets that night. Over 3,500 pounds of sand are needed to anchor the bags and keep from a potential fire. And while you could bundle up and walk the neighborhoods, most families choose to drive it. The festive event is free, but residents are encouraged to give back to those in need by bringing non-perishable food and personal care items to be donated to the West Ohio Food Bank.
Monetary donations are also welcome. For every $1 raised, the West Ohio Food Bank can provide six meals to those who are hungry. As you exit Indianbrook, look for our friends from the Basement Doctor and turn in your donation. They will be passing out candy cane inspired lollipops.
New this year, we welcome Chief Supermarket! They will be handing out Christmas cookies at the Ft. Amanda Road entrance of the Amanda Lakes neighborhood. Also, tune into Woofboom Radio’s Fun 107.1 for all your holiday favorites while you drive thru the lights.
As the neighborhoods plan for the event, they will also be competing in a Deck the House Contest with categories of: Most Original, Best Use of Lights, Most Extravagant, Best Theme, and Inside-Out (indoor displays that are visible from the street). Winners will receive awards for each category and a coveted traveling award for Best Overall! Thank you to our lighting contest sponsor: Stolly Insurance Group.
IMPORTANT: We have no control over the weather and need to plan for wind, rain, ice or other poor conditions that will make the event less than desirable for your family and ours. We take a lot of time planning, organizing and facilitating this event and want it to be amazing. Please sign up for our text alerts in case of inclement weather. Text #holidaylights to 419-741-4438. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, our rain date will be December 19th.
