Shoplifters flee officers, crash vehicle

LIMA — A shoplifting incident Friday led to a high-speed chase through parts of Allen County and the city of Lima, ending with the vehicle crashing into a utility pole at the intersection of Robb Avenue and North Cole Street.

According to Sgt. Ryan Ream with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, an unnamed retail store near The Lima Mall reported the theft of items from the store. Just after 1 p.m. Dep. Justin Kirk noticed a car matching the description from the shoplifting incident and turned his vehicle around at Latham and Crestwood and started following it.

That driver, Mark White, then led the deputy on a chase that reached speeds of 80 to 90 miles per hour.

When White crashed his vehicle, it caused it to flip onto its side.

White was able to get out but an unnamed female passenger was stuck inside. Kirk and Ream had to cut the window out to get her out.

Both were taken to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center to be treated for their injuries.

White has been charged with willfully fleeing an officer, a felony, while the unnamed female passenger is charged with theft.
