Late evening fire at vacant Lima residence deemed ‘suspicious in nature’

LIMA — A Sunday night fire that caused an estimated $26,000 in damages to a vacant house in Lima has been deemed “suspicious in nature.”

A spokesman for the Lima Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched at 11:08 p.m. Sunday to 764 St. Johns Ave. in reference to a house fire. Upon their arrival, firefights discovered a fire in the living room area of the first floor of the locked structure. Firemen forced their way inside and extinguished the blaze, the spokesman said.

No one was located inside the home and neighbors told firefighters the residence, owned by Jerome McNeal, was vacant. The back door had been unsecured, leading to the suspicions about the origin of the blaze.

The incident remains under investigation, according to the department spokesman.
