Fatal accident investigated by Highway Patrol

HARROD — One person was killed in a crash at state Route 309 and Napoleon Road Saturday night.

According to the Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at approximately 7:46 p.m., troopers responded to the scene.

A 2002 Ford Explorer, operated by Jackie G. Manns, 60, of Ada, was westbound on state Route 309.

A 2003 Honda Accord, operated by Zackery L. R. Smith, 20, of Lima, was northbound on Napoleon Road.

Smith continued north into the intersection after stopping at the stop sign and was struck on the right side by Manns’ vehicle. Both vehicles came to final rest off road on the northwest side of the road.

Manns was transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Smith was transported to Lima Memorial Health Systems with non-life threatening injuries.

There were four passengers in Smith’s vehicle. The front seat passenger, Sabrina N. Marcum, 19, of Lima, was transported to Lima Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The backseat left side passenger, Briana C. D. Mullen, 18, of Lima, was transported to Lima Memorial, where she is listed in critical condition.

The backseat middle passenger, Pattie L. J. Hefner, age 18, of Lima, was transported to Lima Memorial with serious injuries. The back seat right side passenger, Austin J. Smith, age 19, of Lima, was pronounced dead on the scene by Allen County Coroner’s Assistant Jamie Sizemore.

Alcohol or drugs are not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Both drivers and the front seat passenger in Mr. Smith’s vehicle were reportedly wearing seat belts. All backseat passengers in Smith’s vehicle were reportedly not wearing seat belts.

The Lima post was assisted by Lafayette Fire Department, Westminster Fire and EMS, Perry Township EMS, Harrod EMS, St. Vincent Life Flight, the Allen County Coroner’s Office and Blake’s Towing.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds motorists to never drive distracted, wear a properly adjusted seat belt regardless of seating position in a vehicle and take precaution when crossing through intersections.
