PANDORA — Behind every classic car is a story, and this week’s story on a 1985 Mercedes 300 SD Turbo Diesel is about love.
Herman Ring, of Pandora, owns this Mercedes. He’s owned it since 1988 and is the second owner of the car.
The license plate reads TH AMORE, meaning That’s Amore or that’s love. Ring and his late wife, Nina, were huge Dean Martin fans, and that song was “their song” throughout their 50 years of marriage. Nina passed away in 2009.
The Mercedes-Benz nameplate is synonymous with luxury. Mercedes-Benz started working on planning the next generation S-Class model in October 1973. Three goals were specified: improved ride, better handling and improved fuel efficiency. By 1979, the plan was complete with a sleeker and more aerodynamic model than the previous models.
Ring’s engine is a turbo diesel four stroke and has five cylinders. It features an automatic four-speed transmission, power steering and is fully loaded with options, including a factory sun roof.
The car is a full-size touring sedan, and according to Ring, you can drive it for hundreds of miles without feeling road weary. The car has 139,000 miles on it and still runs and looks great. It is driven frequently.
The love of the car can be found in the memories cited by Ring, which include numerous family trips, vacations and taking grandchildren out for special birthday dinners.
