Mayor weighs in on council’s chief talks

LIMA — After Lima City Council opened up conversations about changing the selection process for safety services chief appointments, Mayor David Berger weighed in about the controversial topic during the city’s weekly press conference.

“Though no system is perfect, it is my firm belief that the current method of nurturing internal candidates for leadership positions has well served the police and fire departments and the community as a whole,” Berger wrote in a memo received by council.

“The current system provides us with candidates in whom an investment has already been made throughout their careers. These individuals are rooted in our community, they have made professional commitments to serving our community, and they have done so with courage, integrity and professionalism.”
