LIMA — A Lima man charged with three counts of rape, kidnapping and felonious assault accepted a plea deal from prosecutors Tuesday morning and was immediately sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Lamar Meeks, 31, pleaded guilty to one count of rape and one count of felonious assault in exchange for the state’s dismissal of three remaining charges.
Meeks was indicted by an Allen County grand jury in May in connection with alleged incidents that took place on March 21, during which police say Meeks forced himself sexually upon a woman with whom he had a prior and ongoing relationship.
The indictment included three counts of rape and one count of kidnapping, each first-degree felonies, and one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony.
Judge Jeffrey Reed sentenced Meeks to a mandatory prison term of seven years on the rape charge and a consecutive three-year term on the felonious assault charge. Meeks was designated a Tier 3 sex offender and will be required to register with authorities every 90 days for the rest of his life.
Assistant Allen County Prosecuting Attorney Destiny Caldwell said the victim of the assault, who was present in court Tuesday, suffered “great psychological harm” as a result of the attacks.
Meeks apologized for his actions on the night in question.
“We got carried away that night. But I take responsibility for my actions. I’m ready to do my time, get it over with and come home,” he told the judge.
According to court documents, on March 21 Lima police were dispatched to 615 E. 4th Street, Lima, in reference to an assault. Prior to arrival, LPD dispatch advised officers the victim left the scene and was with her father at a location at St. Johns and Fairview avenues.
LPD officers spoke with the victim, who identified the suspect as Meeks. She told police the man was at her residence when he wanted to have sex with her, and she refused. She said Meeks forced her into having sex against her will.
At the hospital the victim gave a more detailed statement, saying Meeks had assaulted her by choking and punching her and threatening to kill her and twice penetrated her sexually during the assault.
The police report states that the victim was bleeding after the fact and had a bump on her forehead. She appeared to have a petechia in her eye, which is consistent with strangulation, investigators said, and police found blood at the residence.
The following day police went to a home on Erie Street in Lima and received permission to search to residence. Meeks was discovered hiding in the attic and was taken into custody.
