LIMA — A Lima man charged with three counts of rape and other assorted felonies was presented with an offer Tuesday that would cap his maximum potential prison sentence at 10 years.

Lamar Meeks, 31, has one week to accept a deal from prosecutors that calls for him to plead guilty to one first-degree felony count of rape and one second-degree felony charge of felonious assault. In exchange for that plea, prosecutors will drop two additional rape charges and one count of first-degree felony kidnapping.

Meeks appeared before Allen County Common Pleas Court Judge Jeffrey Reed Tuesday for a pre-trial hearing in anticipation of a Sept. 25 jury trial. Another pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 18, at which time defense attorney Greg Donohue will discuss a motion to suppress some statements made by his client following his arrest earlier this year. The acceptance by Meeks of the plea deal on the table would negate the hearing.

According to court records, on March 21 Lima police were dispatched to 615 E. 4th Street in reference to an alleged assault. Police quickly learned the alleged victim had left the scene and was with her father at a residence on St. Johns Avenue. Officers spoke with the victim, who identified Meeks as the suspect. She told told officers Meeks was at her residence and wanted to have sex with her and she refused. She said Meeks forcibly had sex with her without her consent, assaulted her by choking and punching her and threatened to kill her. She said Meeks forcibly had sex with her while on the couch. According to court documents, the alleged victim was bleeding and had a bump on her forehead and other physical signs consistent with strangulation, according to the report.

The following day, police went to 955 Erie St. and received consent to search the residence. Meeks was found hiding in the attic and was taken into custody. Meeks reportedly did admit to choking and striking the alleged victim and penetrating her while assaulting her, according to court documents.

If convicted of the rape charge, Meeks would be labeled a Tier 3 sex offender and would be required to register with the authorities every 90 days for the rest of his life.
