Childers president retires from radio, joins ALL

LIMA — Matt Childers, former president of Childers Media Radio Group, has been named as the new executive director of Allen Lima Leadership — a Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce training program that prepares local residents for leadership roles in the community.

“I look forward to continuing the greats works of those that came before me and grow ALL in a variety of new ways, all the while engaging the next community leaders,” Childers said in a statement.

As for Childers Media Radio Group, the iconic downtown business responsible for five local radio stations, the company may be getting a new name. Currently owned by Indiana-based Woof Boom Radio, President J Chapman said he plans on keeping the station locally managed and doesn’t foresee any major shakeups in how the business is operated due to already aligned values between Woof Boom and Childers Media.

Woof Boom officially bought the downtown property this past February after partnering with Childers Media in August 2017. The company also owns stations in the Indiana cities of Anderson, Lafayette and Muncie.

As for the Childers name, Chapman said much of the public already recognizes the radio stations by separate names, and the “Childers” name should stay with Matt, who has taken the new position with the Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce.

“We’ll do something that is reflective on how we do business,” Chapman said. “So at some point, we need to do something that’s reflective of who we are and what our priorities are.”

Chamber President Jed Metzger said Childers was a good fit for ALL as he had a good sense of the community and knows local business leaders.

“Basically, we wanted somebody in the position that was a leader,” Metzger said. “We want to re-engage the alumni and bring ALL to a higher level. That’s what we’re looking at.”

Childers’ responsibilities, Metzger said, will be to grow the program, encourage participation and increase donations. The chamber will also be shifting some of its other leadership programs under ALL’s umbrella.

Prior to his appointment, Childers graduated from the program in 2001 and has sat on the program’s advisory board for the past five years.

“Matt will be a great addition and asset to the Allen Lima Leadership program and will bring a tremendous set of skills and talents to our greater community,” Metzger said in a statement.
