VAN WERT — The Van Wert County Fair begins Wednesday and runs through Monday, Sept. 3 at the Van Wert County Fairgrounds, 1055 S. Washington St., Van Wert.

For the convenience of the public, opening ceremonies have changed to Wednesday evening.

“We are changing the ribbon cutting from Wednesday morning to Wednesday evening; because 8 a.m. on a Wednesday is a little bit harder to attend than at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening. This is in front of the grandstand,” said Quincy Thompson, marketing manager.

The fair has obtained a new ride company — Big O Amusements out of the Columbus area — as the former ride company no longer does fairs.

“This is our first year with them, so we are having new rides this year,” said Thompson. “Wristbands are $18.”

Kids will have an additional place to explore with the new Kids Zone.

“The Kid Zone is a free area for the kids to come to participate in smaller activities, like coloring and little interactive things,” said Thompson.

Again for the children, COSI on Wheels is coming from Columbus and the fair has added a Bird Encounter.

“You can walk in and be with the birds and feed the birds,” said Thompson. “The Exotic Petting Zoo is back this year, as well.”

There will be live pro wrestling at 6 p.m. Friday with the Heroes Legends, and music will be provided on a daily basis in the Music Pavilion.

The grandstand events are back this year, which includes the Demo Derby.

“A really cool thing happening this year for the Demo Derby is we’re having one charity Demo Derby race for the DARE program. All the money raised for that demo derby will go towards the DARE program in the county and city. That’s really exciting because there are a bunch of businesses involved in that event. That will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2 in the grandstand,” said Thompson.

And of course, everyone’s favorite fair food will be on the grounds.
