BLUFFTON — Bluffton Family Recreation has recently opened the Mercy Health Fitness Studio, an area that helps enhance the exercise experience, according to Daniel Tinch, Bluffton Family Recreation executive director.
Prior to the recent renovation, the open second floor of the facility was a designated area with bleachers for people to watch soccer games on the lower level.
In an effort to help expand exercise options, Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center donated $10,000 toward renovating the second floor.
After about a six-month renovation, the 2,500-square-foot area is a space where Bluffton-area residents can receive fitness classes and use TRX equipment. This stands for total resistance exercise equipment and was developed by Navy Seal Randy Hetrick.
“For us, it gave us the ability to be doing more things at once because now we do not have to have fitness class in the gym,” said Tinch. “We can have it up here and also have something going on in the gym.”
The Mercy Health Fitness Studio offers two types of TRX equipment, the TRX Pro4 System and the TRX Rip Trainer.
The TRX Pro4 System is a set of hand straps for suspension training, which Tinch said is beneficial for people of all ages.
“It’s an all-body weight workout because you’re able to do plies, press and depending on where your feet are placed you can determine the difficulty level,” said Tinch. “Because of it being a body weight workout, it’s easier on the joints, which is very popular for seniors.”
The fitness center also offers TRX Rip Trainers, weighted bar and resistance bungees. This is mainly used by athletes to train for sports like baseball and golf. This can also be used for squats and powerlifting.
Bluffton-area residents who would like to try the new equipment can enroll in a class. These courses will help participants recover from knee injuries or be for general fitness, Tinch said.
Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center agreed to a $5,000 community match, which Tinch said will be for additional equipment.
