LEIPSIC — A suspected illegal immigrant is in the Putnam County Jail after a freak accident where he drove his car into his home, injuring his 3-year-old son.

Wilmer Maurico Herrera-Ruiz lost control of his vehicle at 6:03 p.m. Wednesday, driving into his home at 717 W. Broadway St., Leipsic. His son, who was inside the residence, is in critical condition at a children’s hospital in Columbus, said Sgt. Alec Coil, with the Lima Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors in the accident. Herrera-Ruiz is currently being held in jail while the investigation proceeds.

The address where the crash happened is an apartment building owned by Pandora Investments, of Bluffton, according to the Putnam County Auditor website.
