RUSSELLS POINT — Russells Point will be getting a sister city in Ourem/Fatima, Portugal — a town associated with reported sightings of the Blessed Virgin.

The American Society of Ephesus, Inc. will be bringing the mayor of Fatima, Luis Miguel Albuquerque, to Russells Point Friday, Aug. 10, to sign the formal sister city agreement during a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at the Russells Point Municipal Building, 433 state Route 708.

The following day, St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church will be hosting a Mass to recognize the visit at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11.

In 1964, the American Society of Ephesus erected a shrine on St. Mary’s Point commemorating the Fatima miracle when visions of the Blessed Virgin reportedly appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal. According to the news release, Albuquerque’s arrival will be the first time an official representative from Fatima has visited the shrine.
