Threat of rain hasn’t hampered fundraising efforts

MIDDLE POINT — Rainy skies didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for organizers of this year’s Showcase of Bands at Huggy Bear Campground near Middle Point.

It’s a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The event is now in its seventh year.

“Camping is for families and fun and kids to do things and we kind of just talked around. We wanted to do some kind of benefit and we just thought St. Jude would be perfect and it just really took off. People are just so supportive of St. Jude, and so generous and it’s just amazing how it’s grown,” said Vicki Otto, event coordinator.

Many of the activities were continuing despite the rain. There’s a silent auction inside the community building that runs until 8 p.m. today. Also, from 6-8 p.m. today there will be a live auction with a number of donated items.

“Somebody just brought in a pub table. There’s a big kids barn, a tailgating grill, neon lights, just all kinds of things,” she said.

Rain and thunderstorms rolled through Friday night, delaying the entertainment.

“We just say we’re not going to let this rain on our parade and not going to let that bother us. We have lots of tents. We bought another huge tent this year so there’s a huge 80-by-80 area that’s under tent and there’s two other tents besides those and we have the big building that will have the silent auction and the bucket drawings and things are in so so far there’s a great crowd here and I’m sure it would have been better if it was not raining but people are still coming out and staying dry,” she said.

Admission to the Showcase of Bands is $6 today, with those 15 and under getting in free.
