OTTAWA — Putnam County Common Pleas Judge Keith Schierloh on Wednesday approved a request from the attorney for Zachariah Casteel, a 20-year-old Leipsic man charged with raping a 15- or 16-year-old girl in Putnam County earlier this year, for additional time to prepare a case on behalf of his client.
Schierloh granted defense attorney Drew Mihalik until Aug. 1 to file any and all pre-trial motions associated with the case. The judge scheduled the final pre-trial hearing for Sept. 12 and set Oct. 2 as the date for a jury trial.
Casteel was indicted June 20 by a Putnam County grand jury on the rape charge. The indictment states that on or about April 6 of this year Casteel “did engage in sexual conduct with another when the offender purposely compels the other person to submit by force or threat of force.”
The alleged victim, identified in court documents simply as “Jane Doe,” was born in 2002, according to court documents.
