LIMA — Sheridan-Lex O’Neal is excited about entering his Senior year at Shawnee High School in the fall.
His recent experience at Buckeye Boys State proved to be helpful in the development of his leadership skills.
“Being invited to Boys State was such an honor and I am proud to say that I learned more and grew as a person. During the week, I was able to see all that government jobs have to offer. I learned a lot about elections and how each individual person can affect a job. It was a big set for me to run for an office position, something I never thought I would do and I am glad that I tried,” O’Neal said.
This year’s program was held at Miami of Ohio University in Oxford.
O’Neal spent eight days on the Miami campus getting hands-on experience in operations of the Ohio government functions and meeting other Ohio students. He had the opportunity of working in the Auditors Office and learning how the State Auditor operates.
“At Boys State, I was able to see how adults have to manage their money and balance their schedule. This program showed me how tough some jobs can be but also how equally rewarding they can be if done right. There were lots of times in the State Auditor’s Office I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to meet our deadlines, but once we worked together, we were able to complete our job. The camp also allowed me to meet all types of people and make some friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime,” he said.
O’Neal was selected to attend Buckeye Boys State by American Legion Post #96.
Buckeye Boys State is designed to assist boys in preparing for their future by providing the experience of living in a college environment, education in leadership and development of management skills that will help them towards any career path they may choose. All this while, they are learning about a vital part of every citizen’s life, which is how Ohio government operates and functions.
O’Neal will attend college to study either architecture, engineering or law.
