LIMA — The two individuals appointed as Allen County Interim Auditor and Allen County Interim Treasurer, Rachael Gilroy and Evalyn Shaffner, respectively, were voted into the positions officially by the Allen County Republican Party Wednesday evening.
Gilroy, who had been Allen County Treasurer, took up the auditor’s role after former Allen County Auditor Rhonda Eddy-Stienecker stepped down to take a job at a nonprofit in Indiana. Shaffner was Gilroy’s chief deputy of finance, who was then bumped into the treasurer’s role.
Gilroy ran for Allen County Auditor unopposed in the Republican primary this May and has no contender in the November election. Shaffner will fulfill her role as treasurer until that position is up for re-election in 2020.
Shaffner has spent 11 years working in a number of different accounting roles within the county government. Prior to that, Shaffner worked with Artspace Lima & Council for the Arts and Encore Theatre. She began her career at Veterans Memorial Civic Center as an accounting technician in 1988.
Shaffner said she has no particular initiatives planned for the treasurer position. Currently, the most pressing task in the treasurer’s office is dealing with taxes being due.
“Rachael has done a great job in the treasurer’s office, and we’ll continue down the path we’re going on,” Shaffner said.
As for Gilroy’s initiatives as auditor, one change she has already made is to keep the auditor’s office open on Tuesday afternoons. Originally, Eddy-Stienecker’s staff utilized that time away from the front desk for staff meetings and trainings.
Gilroy has also said she plans on appointing Allen County Republican Party Chairman Keith Cheney as her chief deputy auditor. Cheney is also the chairman of the Allen County Board of Elections. Cheney had recused himself of that position when he ran and lost against long-time Mayor David Berger in the 2017 election cycle.
When Cheney was asked what some of his responsibilities as chief deputy auditor will include, he said he’ll do the same thing that other chief deputy auditors do — whatever their bosses tell them to do.
