LIMA — A Continental woman who engaged in consensual sex with an inmate at the Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution last year was sentenced Monday to four years on probation.
Katie Bland, 35, pleaded guilty in May to an amended charge of gross sexual imposition, a fourth-degree felony, after initially being indicted by an Allen County grand jury on a third-degree felony count of sexual battery.
At that time, Bland admitted she engaged in sexual relations at the Lima prison with a male over which she had disciplinary authority.
The Continental woman had been employed at the prison for two years as a subcontracted nursing assistant. She was employed by Medical Staffing Network, a firm based in Toledo, and was placed at Allen Oakwood as a State Tested Nursing Assistant, which she said “resulted in the alleged acts” contained in the indictment.
Bland’s attorney, Greg Donohue, said his client was “in a bad place” mentally when the consensual sex occurred. He said Bland has been treated for depression and that her issues have “been resolved.”
By virtue of her plea to a negotiated deal with prosecutors, Bland was labeled a Tier I sex offender and will be required to register annually for the next 15 years with the sheriff’s office in her county of residence, Judge Jeffrey Reed said during Monday’s sentencing hearing.
In addition to the four-year term of community control, Bland must perform 40 hours of community service and was fined $1,000. She was also ordered to complete any treatment recommended by the probation department.
Because the charge is a sex-related felony, she will be required to serve a mandatory five-year term on parole.
