SPENCERVILLE — A few rain showers haven’t deterred organizers of this year’s Summerfest from moving forward with plans.
The event had its beginnings a quarter century ago.
“It got started with the sesquicentennial. It was the first year for the fireworks and we were asked to keep them going, me and Lynn Cummings, so this is actually our 25th year for fireworks and then the firemen ended up joining us later on and we built from there,” said Ida Kay Keller, longtime chairwoman of Summerfest.
The event brings thousands back to Spencerville and many use it as a fundraiser for their organization.
“It’s got a hometown atmosphere and it also involves different groups throughout the community like the firemen, they sponsor the carnival, so that’s a fundraiser for them. The Eastern Stars use it as a fundraiser. The EMS with their garage sales is a fundraiser for them. There’s different groups, I could go on and on. It’s a way to get everybody in the community involved, and we’re proud of our community that sort of showcases the community,” said Keller.
Nearly every year weather is a concern, whether is extremely high temperatures or storms that threaten the event.
“We work around it,” Keller said with a laugh. “We’re watching the weather really carefully and there’s only been, out of 25 years, we’ve only had to go to the next day (for the fireworks) twice so if it got really stormy, rain doesn’t affect fireworks — it affects people,” she said.
Looking into her weather crystal ball, Keller was confident they’ll have good weather when they need it.
“The parade is good, the fireworks are good and I think they’ll be able to get some rides in but there’s probably going to be a couple pop-ups,” she said.
Today’s events include the Summerfest 5K Run at 9 a.m., a vendor/craft show at the Village Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Summerfest Route 66 Car Show between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., the parade at 4:30 p.m., three different bands in the entertainment tent starting at 5 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m.
