LIMA — Newly-appointed Allen County Auditor Rachael Gilroy has appointed Keith Cheney, the Allen County Republican chairman, as her chief deputy auditor.
Cheney, who ran against Lima Mayor David Berger in the 2017 election, also holds a seat on the Allen County Board of Elections as its chairman. He had recused himself from that position during the mayoral race.
Gilroy said there’s no legal conflict of interest between the positions of board of election chairman and chief deputy auditor.
Gilroy said some responsibilities of Cheney as the chief deputy auditor will be shifting as she moves into the department. Gilroy could not be reached for further clarification Friday. Cheney also could not be reached Friday.
The Allen County Republican central and executive committees are responsible for appointees to county positions if an elected official vacates the position. Since Rhonda Eddy-Stienecker resigned from her position a week ago, Gilroy, who had been county treasurer, stepped into the position. Gilroy had been the lone candidate for auditor in the May Republican primary and has no Democratic challenger in November.
Gilroy’s vacation as Allen County Treasurer, however, left that seat open. The Allen County commissioners appointed Gilroy’s chief deputy treasurer, Evalyn Shaffner, into the interim treasurer role until the Allen County Republican committees can confirm a full-time appointment. Cheney, as Allen County Republican Party Chairman, recently announced the process for accepting resumes to fill that position.
