LIMA — The Shawnee Township Fire Department responded to a gas station fire Monday morning at Shawnee Fuel Stop, 1250 W. Breese Road, Lima.
“We received a call for a fire at a gas station,” said Capt. Bryon Stumbaugh of the Shawnee Township Fire Department. “Leaving the station, we could see the smoke already. We didn’t know what was on fire until we arrived on scene. We found an underground storage tank was being removed that must not have had all the fuel out of it.”
The contractor touched a wire with the excavator he was using to extract the tank, and that started the fire, Stumbaugh said.
Upon arrival, the Shawnee firefighters secured a water source, shut the street down to traffic, evacuated the buildings and applied Class B Foam to the fire.
“The fire went out quite quickly,” Stumbaugh said.
After the fire was extinguished, a representative from the Environmental Protection Agency was present to make certain no residual runoff contaminated the sewer. Officers from the state fire marshal’s office were on the way to inspect the storage tanks and check for possible threats of explosions, he said.
Shawnee Fuel Stop will probably be closed for at least 24 hours, Stumbaugh said.
No injuries were reported. The Shawnee Township Fire Department was back in service at 12:30 p.m.
