LIMA — The Allen County Educational Service Center board voted to employ former Elida and Spencerville Superintendent Joel Hatfield as interim superintendent while they search for a full time superintendent during a special board meeting Tuesday.
The previous ESC superintendent, Steve Arnold, accepted the superintendent position with the Central Local School District in Defiance County in April. Arnold also acted as superintendent for the Western Buckeye Educational Service Center in Van Wert and Paulding counties while doing the same job in Allen County.
Arnold will be done at the end of May, said Ann Best, Allen County ESC board president, and Hatfield will be covering the position until they can get someone hired full time. Hatfield will assume the position on June 4, and will continue for a period not to exceed 25 days. His time as interim superintendent is set to end on July 31. He will be paid $400 per day per time sheet.
She also said Hatfield will only be the interim superintendent for the Allen County ESC and not for Western Buckeye ESC because that partnership has been dissolved.
“It was basically a shared superintendent and we have decided to not share a superintendent any longer,” Best said.
The ESC board has received 13 applications for the open superintendent position, and they are going to begin evaluating them and setting up interviews soon, Best said. Until that time, she can not give a timeline of when the position will be filled.
“Of course we want to do it as soon as possible, but we really can’t say at this point,” she said. “We are hoping to start those interviews quickly.”
