ST. MARYS — A male subject who threatened suicide and answered the door of his residence holding a firearm when police arrived at his St. Marys area home was eventually taken into custody Tuesday by special response teams from Auglaize and Shelby counties.

According to a statement released Wednesday by the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Tuesday at approximately 5:55 p.m. to the report of a possible suicidal subject. Upon their arrival at 211 Eastway Court, officers were confronted by a man who came to the door carrying a firearm. The subject then went back inside the residence.

Deputies continued to try and talk the male subject out of his residence while he was still inside, but those attempts were unsuccessful, according to the statement.

At that point the Auglaize County Special Response Team and Shelby County Special Response Team were called to the residence. Once the teams were on scene, continued attempts were made with the male to exit his residence. After a period of time, the subject did exit his residence without the firearm but did not fully comply with commands from deputies and a Taser was used to subdue him.

The subject was taken to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys and was later taken to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s for further evaluation.

The Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by St. Marys Police Department, St. Marys Fire and EMS and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. The Ohio State Highway Patrol also assisted with traffic control.

This incident still remains under investigation and nothing further can be released at this time, according to the sheriff’s statement.
