LIMA — A 51-year-old, HIV-infected Lima man was sentenced Monday in Allen County Common Pleas Court to five years in prison for having unprotected sex with a 17-year-old girl.
Craig Lewis appeared in court for a change of plea hearing, where he accepted a deal from prosecutors that called for him to plead guilty to an amended charge of attempted rape, a second-degree felony, and a single count of felonious assault, also a felony of the second degree. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dismissed two counts of rape, felonies of the first degree. As part of the stipulated agreement, prosecutors recommended Lewis serve no more than five years behind bars.
Judge Jeffrey Reed honored that agreement in passing sentence. Lewis was also classified as a Tier 3 sex offender and will be required to register with the sheriff in his county of residence every 90 days for life.
An indictment handed down by an Allen County grand jury in January alleged that on or about Oct. 14, 2017, Lewis did engage in sexual conduct with the minor girl at his Shawnee Township home.
A statement was read in court prior to sentencing Monday from the mother of the teenage victim.
“My heart is broken that I couldn’t protect my daughter that night. My daughter will suffer … a lifetime of pain, anguish and mental torture because of this monster,” the statement said.
