DELPHOS — Investigators from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation were in Delphos Monday at the scene of a suspected homicide that law enforcement authorities say left a 22-month-old girl dead.
According to a statement from the Lima Sheriff’s Office, Delphos police received a 9-1-1 call from Vicky Shellabarger at 12:12 a.m. on April 29 and were dispatched to an apartment at 218 N. Main St. Upon their arrival, first responders from the Delphos EMS found Shellabarger’s daughter, Madilynn Shellabarger of Convoy, not breathing and unresponsive.
The young girl was transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s, where attempts to revive her were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead.
The infant’s death was described by Delphos Police Chief Mark Slate as suspicious in nature. An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, Delphos police and the Ohio BCI.
The entrance to the apartment BCI officials were seen entering Monday is located in an alley east of Main Street in Delphos.
No suspects in the child’s death have been taken into custody. Allen County law enforcement officials on Monday said that additional information is expected to be released later this week and that further details related to the incident will be made public as the investigation allows.
