Wapak High evacuated after note ‘of threatening nature’ found

WAPAKONETA — Students at Wapakoneta High School were evacuated shortly after noon Thursday after a note was found that a spokesperson for the Wapakoneta Police Department said was “of some concern.”

Most high school students were dismissed for the day by early afternoon, said the police spokesperson, while students at the nearby elementary school remained in class.

Police maintained a presence at both buildings as the investigation into the incident continued.

School officials could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.

According to the Wapakoneta High School Facebook page, the note found inside the school was of a “threatening nature.”

“Based upon that threat and working with law enforcement, we decided to evacuate the building. Law enforcement did search students as they exited the building,” school officials posted on the social media site. “The building was cleared by law enforcement. Students who could drive were sent home after they were searched. Other students were transported to a safe location off site, and parents are being contacted.”

Other buildings in the school district were notified, and staff at those sites took precautions, according to the Facebook post.

“We will continue to investigate this as we take this threat very seriously,” school officials said. “We expect to have school on a normal schedule (Friday), and we will inform you if we have any additional details.”
