OTTOVILLE — The Putnam County Sheriff’s office is investigating an incident of vandalism at the Immaculate Conception Church in Ottoville and to the nearby Ottoville Park.
The spray paint vandalism was done in the early hours of April 28 and was noticed by a priest at the church who called authorities just at 9:11 a.m. Saturday.
“‘God’s Not Real!!!’, ‘Satan,’ ‘666’ and the pentagram was on the church. There was some equipment right next to the church, they were using on the stained glass, they put a swastika on that. A lot of those things were repeated over in the adjacent park,” said Sgt. Mark Brecht with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
Other vulgarities that were written were not suitable for publication.
“About every bench and every picnic table underneath the shelter house was spray painted. It’s going to take quite a bit to clean it up,” he said.
Workers immediately started the process to remove the graffiti.
“They were able to clean the church up with a pressure washer. They have got that taken care of. The stuff out at the park, because it was on a painted surface, it might be a little bit more difficult to deal with, but they’re still in the process of finding out the best way to clean it,” he said.
The church and park were not the only things tagged by the vandals.
“We had a house out on Road 27 near Road S, they had an outbuilding that was about 14 feet off the roadway. It was spray painted with Folk Nation and the pentagram,” he said.
Brecht says Folk Nation is a gang that originated out of the Chicago area but has spread throughout the Midwest. He’s not sure if this vandalism is gang related or not.
“We haven’t had any gang activity that we’re aware of or anything as far as that and we haven’t had any incidents of vandalism like this. This is the first incident,” he said.
Brecht says he’ll be looking for evidence on who might be responsible for the vandalism.
“There were no cameras in the area but there are some cameras in town. I just have to get with those businesses to find out if any of them point towards the road,” he said.
Brecht says that there were also reports of spray paint damage done to cars in Delphos.
