BLUFFTON — Dakota Bricker, 19, a senior at Bluffton High School is counting down the days until graduation.
“I don’t really know what college I’m going to go to yet, but I plan to major in mechanical engineering,” he said.
It’s a field that’s been calling him for many years.
“Growing up I just liked mechanics and being hands-on with stuff, so hopefully that’s something I can find that will keep me busy in something that I like,” he said.
Bricker has found himself drawn to the automotive part of mechanical engineering.
“I always watch car shows and I just like working on them. I’ve always had “toys” like dirt bikes and stuff growing up so I just liked all that kind of stuff,” said Bricker.
He’s hoping the field of mechanical engineering will be a good career path for him.
“I’m going to college to see where that takes me, any of those things I feel I would like to do,” he said.
Bricker has narrowed down his choices of colleges.
“So far, I’ve considered ONU [Ohio Northern University in Ada], [University of ] Toledo, and Trine [in Angola, Indiana] because I know they have pretty good engineering programs and their co-ops are pretty good too,” he said.
Bricker has also been active in sports during his time at Bluffton High School.
“I play three sports year-round, football, baseball, and basketball. I did camps for basketball in the summer and this past year I did [American] Legion ball in Findlay, Post 3, so that was a good experience,” he said.
The lesson that sport teaches you is something he hopes to take with him in any career path he ventures down.
“The thing it teaches you, [is to] deal with adversity and be able to just try your best and know that if you keep trying your best you’ll be able to succeed in what you want to,” he said.
As for student life at Bluffton High School, Bricker is pleased with the small town atmosphere.
“It’s just small and everyone knows each other and l just like interacting with my friends, so just being able to see them every day is pretty cool,” he said.
