DELPHOS — Stadium Park in Delphos is the new location for this year’s Organ Donor Dash.
The sixth annual 5K run/walk will begin at 1:08 p.m. April 29.
The cost for pre-registration is $20 for the 5K, if you want a race T-shirt, $15 if you don’t.
The day of the race, the cost climbs to $25.
“We’ve grown every single year. Our goal is to get more donor families and organ donor recipients out there because we do a little ceremony to honor all those people. That’s what it’s all about,” said Deann Heiing, co-organizer of the event.
If you are a survivor or have donated organs to someone, you can contact Heiing to become a part of the pre-race festivities. She can be reached at email@example.com or 419-230-2963.
Heiing is a registered nurse at Lima Memorial Health System and had previously worked at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s. She has a passion for the benefits of organ donation.
“I’ve seen both sides of it. I have an aunt who was a kidney recipient, so I saw what she had to go through and then also being a nurse in the ICU I’ve had to deal with some families who have been dealt with the fact of when their loved one was brain dead making the decision to donate organs — and I just feel like it’s so important. We have so many people waiting on organs in the United States and when someone passes away like that if they could do something to make a good thing out of a terrible situation it makes them a hero by donating organs,” she said.
“We are in collaboration with Lifeline of Ohio, which is our local foundation that does the organ donation, and every year we go to their Evening with the Stars and they have recipients there, plus there are local people who have been affected by it. The stories are just tremendous. I know a lady who was a heart recipient from Lima actually and she has met the family of the lady who donated her heart and they get together every year for occasions and that sort of thing,” she said.
