CAIRO — A two-lane steel bridge on Wentz Road running across Rattlesnake Creek northwest of Cairo has been closed by the Allen County Engineer’s Office after being deemed unsafe due to deterioration over time.
The Wentz Road bridge was found to have some structural issues back in 2006 when it received repairs and was limited to under 12-ton vehicles. The deterioration in the last decade, however, has exacerbated the earlier problems, Allen County Engineer Brion Rhodes said. The bridge will now have to replaced, and the bridge will be closed indefinitely until Allen County can find the estimated $250,000 needed to replace the 40-foot span.
Allen County engineers discovered the bridge’s problems during their annual inspections of the 377 bridges in the county. The amount of traffic over the bridge is low, Rhodes said.
