Canton man alleged to be trading fake gold for firearms

CANTON — The Summit County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man alleged to be exchanging fake bars of gold for weapons.

On Wednesday, the department responded to a call in Green from a man who had come from Toledo in response to an advertisement on the website, where someone was offering to sell one-ounce gold bars.

The victim subsequently agreed to trade three rifles in exchange for the gold bars, but after the exchange was made, the victim realized the gold was fake.

Deputies said they were able to identify the seller as Larry T. Carman, 29, of Canton.

Carman was located in a hotel in Green, and during a search of his hotel room, deputies located the three rifles belonging to the victim as well as three handguns, ammunition, replica gold bullion and narcotics.

Carman was arrested and charged with theft, a third-degree felony.
