WAPAKONETA — Despite not having a quorum, the Heritage Trails Park District Board of Park Commissioners discussed upcoming events and projects during their regular meeting Tuesday at the Wapakoneta Chamber of Commerce building.
District Administrative Assistant Terry McDonald said that a project to pave the parking lot at Kuffner Preserve in St. Marys is close to beginning soon. The board has a special fund they can use for projects dealing with transportation and parking at Auglaize County parks, she said.
If all goes as planned, the Ohio Department of Transportation should have the paving complete by October, McDonald said. If there are setbacks with the project, it may not be completed until Spring 2019.
There are some partially downed hickory trees at Kuffner Preserve hanging over the kiosk, said Park Commissioner Dave Stilwell.
“We’ve been having issues at Kuffner with high winds blowing trees down,” McDonald said. “But some trees don’t fall completely.”
McDonald said that if the trees are not an immediate hazard to hikers, they will be removed in the spring. If they fall completely, they will be cut up and taken away by volunteers during a park clean up event. However, if they remain partially fallen, the park board commissioners will hire a tree service to remove them, McDonald said.
In other business, the first Cabin Fever Winter Hike of the year was held Sunday at Lockkeepers House in New Bremen with 47 people attending, McDonald said. The hikes are sponsored in partnership with Grand Lake Health Systems as part of the hospitals fitness program, Stilwell said. Those that participate in the hikes earn points for the fitness programs, which can be used for prizes at the end of the program.
The next Cabin Fever Hike will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 11 beginning at the St. Marys Utility Building.
The next regular meeting of the Heritage Trails Park District Board of Park Commissioners will be at 5 p.m. Feb. 20, 2018, at the Wapakoneta Chamber of Commerce building.
