Man shot after exchanging gunfire with Akron police

AKRON — A man was shot by Akron police early Saturday morning in Kenmore, officials said.

The incident began just before midnight Friday when police were called to the 1300 block of Waterloo Road on a report of a man with a gun, according to police scanner traffic.

When officers arrived, gunfire was exchanged.

It’s not clear who was shot, but the situation appeared to be evolving into a standoff because the SWAT unit was called.

Before SWAT assembled, however, the standoff was resolved.

Who was shot and how seriously that person was injured is unclear. He was taken to an Akron hospital, said Akron fire Lt. Sierjie Lash.

No police officers were injured, Lash said.

A spokesman for the Ohio attorney general’s office confirmed Saturday afternoon that Akron asked the state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation to assist with the probe, but deferred further questions to Akron police because it remained the lead agency.
