Seizures push Putnam County K-9 into retirement

OTTAWA — Seizures forced one of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Offices K-9 dogs into early retirement, according to a Facebook post from the agency.

K-9 Beau, handled by Sgt. Mark Brecht, had three separate seizures, leading to a diagnosis and a second opinion of epilepsy.

“These meds can alter Beau’s behavior,” according to the Facebook post. “This fact can jeopardize court cases involving Beau’s alerts and ‘finds.’ After speaking with Sheriff (Brian) Siefker and Chief Deputy (Verl) Warnimont, it was decided it would be in the best interest to retire Beau.”

Brecht decided to adopt and buy Beau himself to become a member of his family. The agency hopes to raise money to get another donation-funded K-9 officers. The agency asked donors to send checks to the sheriff’s office with the memo “New K-9 purchase.”
